Nail Fungus Treatment – What You Should Know?

Itching, burning, unpleasant odor, changes in nail appearance, and a tendency to recur – these are typical symptoms of nail fungus that significantly reduce quality of life. This condition, especially in its chronic form, can be very troublesome and difficult to treat. It is most often caused by dermatophytes, less frequently by yeasts or molds. Effective therapy requires both proper diagnosis and consistency.

Causes of Nail Fungus

Nail fungus often develops after a previous skin infection of the feet. Pathogens can penetrate through a damaged nail plate, for example due to injury, cut, or improper nail trimming.

Many factors influence the development of the infection, including:

  • weakened immune system (diabetes, obesity, hormonal disorders),
  • long-term antibiotic therapy,
  • use of immunosuppressive drugs,
  • warm and humid environment (tight footwear, lack of foot ventilation),
  • using swimming pools, saunas, and shared showers without proper foot protection.

Symptoms of Nail Fungus

The most common symptoms that should raise concern include:

  • nail discoloration (yellow, white, brown),
  • thickening or splitting of the nail plate,
  • peeling of the nail from the sides or the free edge,
  • nail deformities,
  • unpleasant odor and pain when pressure is applied.

In more advanced cases, the condition may cause discomfort while walking, as well as affect self-esteem and quality of life.

What Does Nail Fungus Treatment Look Like?

Nail fungus does not resolve on its own, which is why proper treatment is necessary. The first step is to visit a dermatologist or podiatrist for diagnosis. Mycological testing is often required.

Treatment includes:

  • regular and thorough foot hygiene,
  • use of topical preparations (ointments, solutions),
  • in some cases – oral treatment (when prescribed by a doctor),
  • supportive podiatry procedures (nail plate cleaning, relieving nail folds),
  • preventive measures that reduce the risk of recurrence.

Patience is key – nail fungus treatment may take several months and requires consistency.
