Mycological and bacteriological research

Mycological and bacteriological tests are an extremely important part of podiatric diagnostics. At FOOT CARE PIONEERS – a podiatry clinic in Katowice – we perform them to accurately determine the type of pathogen responsible for changes in the skin or nails. This allows us to select an effective and safe therapy, increasing the chances of a quick recovery.

When is it worth performing the test?

Microbiological testing is recommended for every patient showing symptoms suggesting a skin or nail infection. This particularly applies to people who:

  • suspect they have a fungal infection of the nails or skin,
  • have chronic nail changes of unclear origin,,
  • have noticed changes in the color, thickness, or structure of the nail plate,
  • experience recurring inflammations around the nail folds,
  • have previously used over-the-counter or pharmacy products without improvement.

How is the test performed at a podiatry clinic?

The sample is collected under sterile and painless conditions. In the case of fungal infections, scrapings are taken from under the nail or from the skin. For bacterial infections, a swab is taken from the affected area, usually the nail fold. The material is then sent to a laboratory for cultivation. The waiting time for results typically ranges from 1 to 4 weeks.

An important part of the examination is also that the podiatrist cleans the nails and skin after collecting the sample preparing them for the start of therapy. This allows treatment to begin sooner and to be tailored even more precisely once the results are available.

Why is the test so important?

Many people reach for over-the-counter antifungal or antibacterial products, which often do not provide results. Microbiological testing allows for a clear determination of whether the problem is a fungal or bacterial infection, or if the changes are due to other systemic conditions. This helps patients avoid long, ineffective, and costly treatments.

At our podiatry clinic in Katowice, mycological and bacteriological tests form the foundation of effective treatment. The podiatrist customizes the therapy for each patient, and every step of the procedure is performed using disposable and sterile tools, ensuring complete safety.
